The Commission on Elections (Comelec) urged that it should reconsider requiring candidates to obtain permits for personal campaigns and motorcades as the current government pandemic guidelines are adequate.
The guidelines ordered by the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF) are sufficient to implement minimum health protocols in election-related activities.
In seeking to regulate campaign activities, the Comelec is dangerously pursuing regulations on free speech and free assembly, which occupy a preferred place in the hierarchy of civil liberties.
What it refers to is Comelec’s request that candidates obtain campaign permits for personal campaigns and motorcades.
“IATF guidelines are in place to ensure mobility restrictions and health protocols so there is no need for a campaign permit system.” Top
