Parañaque City Mayor Eric L. Olivarez today thanked the city’s 16 barangay chairpersons for their pivotal role in solving the garbage pileup caused by the transition from the old to the new garbage hauling contractor starting this year.
He also assured his constituents that the city government is on top of the situation and that he is focused on governance in collaboration with all stakeholders.
“We are thankful to all our barangay chairpersons for their full cooperation and support which enabled us to solve the problem of garbage collection,” he said.
“In fact, our barangay officials have issued certifications to the fact that garbage collection in their jurisdictions has returned to normal, and that out of the 16 barangays, 10 barangays have registered 100% collection efficiency,” the mayor said.
The other barangays registered between 70% to 90% efficiency, but the numbers are all expected to further improve in the coming days until everything has normalized.
“Of course, there are still some areas that we are working on, but these are mostly about collection schedules because our constituents have yet to adjust to the new time and date of garbage hauling,” he added.
Mayor Olivarez also assured that the city’s award of contract to the new contractor is above board since the Bids and Awards Committee issued an invitation to bid last December, and only one garbage hauling company submitted a bid.
“We awarded the contract to the lone bidder because otherwise, we would have a bigger problem without a garbage hauling contractor,” he said.
He added that the contract price was Php400,000 higher than the previous contract because it reflects the current higher fuel prices, but still within the budget approved by the City Council.
“We also thank the City Council members for their support and cooperation in resolving the issue, and we are always ready to find ways to ensure that the delivery of essential services to our people remains unhampered,” Mayor Olivarez added.
