The Bureau of Customs–Ninoy Aquino International Airport (BOC-NAIA), in coordination with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and the NAIA Inter-Agency Drug Interdiction Task Group (NAIA-IADITG), intercepted more than PHP22 million worth of suspected “kush” or high-grade marijuana from an arriving passenger at NAIA Terminal 3.
Acting on President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive to strengthen border security against illegal drugs, authorities flagged a checked-in luggage during routine baggage inspection. X-ray screening revealed suspicious images of an organic substance.
The bag and its owner were subjected to physical examination, which led to the discovery of 16 packs of dried leaves with a distinct odor. A PDEA K9 unit later confirmed the presence of illegal drugs.
The seized contraband weighed 15,078 grams, with an estimated street value of PHP22,617,000. The items were turned over to PDEA for documentation, inventory, and further investigation.
BOC Commissioner Ariel F. Nepomuceno underscored the agency’s resolve in curbing drug smuggling. “This successful interception is a clear message to those who attempt to exploit our borders for illegal activities—we will detect and we will intercept,” he said.
NAIA District Collector Alexandra Y. Lumontad also commended the swift action of Customs personnel and their partner agencies. “The vigilance of our personnel, combined with strong inter-agency cooperation, continues to play a critical role in protecting our communities from the harm caused by illegal drugs,” she said.
The BOC emphasized that the operation highlights its commitment to safeguarding the country’s borders and protecting the Filipino people from the dangers of illegal drugs.
