In the world of law enforcement, titles can be given. Positions can be appointed. But respect is earned.
Inside the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), one name carries that kind of respect — Atty. Antonio Macabasag Pagatpat.
A quiet operator. A low-key leader. A certified workaholic who built his career not through politics or privilege, but through grit, sacrifice, and relentless hard work.
Today, he serves as the Deputy Director for Operations of the National Bureau of Investigation, one of the most critical posts in the Bureau, and widely regarded as one of the most trusted men of NBI Director Atty. Melvin Matibag.
But Tony Pagatpat’s story is not one of overnight success.
It is a story of rising from the ranks.
From the storm-battered town of Guiuan, Eastern Samar — a place that faces some of the most violent typhoons in the country — emerged a young man armed only with determination and courage.
A true “promdi” who dared to take on the chaos, competition, and unforgiving pace of Manila.
And he fought his way up.
Pagatpat earned his law degree from Divine Word University in Tacloban in 1988 and passed the bar examinations the same year with a rating of 80.02 percent.
But even before becoming a lawyer, he had already begun serving the public.
From 1984 to 1986, he served as Kabataang Barangay Municipal Federation President of Salcedo, Samar, already displaying the leadership instincts that would later define his career.
He later served as a Legal Officer III at the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) from 1989 to 1990.
But destiny had a larger battlefield waiting.
Pagatpat eventually joined the National Bureau of Investigation, starting at the bottom as an Investigation Agent I in the Eastern Visayas Regional Office.
There were no shortcuts. No special lanes.
Just work.
From Agent I to Agent IV between 1990 and 1995, he built his reputation the old-fashioned way — through field investigations, operations, and relentless casework.
Years of experience sharpened his instincts, discipline, and command of intelligence work.
By 2003, his performance earned him appointment as Assistant Regional Director.
And the climb continued.
Over the next nine years, Pagatpat steadily rose through the command ladder — from Director III to Director V, earning every promotion through performance, credibility, and leadership.
Then came a defining moment.
On March 7, 2022, under the administration of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, Atty. Pagatpat was appointed Deputy Director for Administration of the NBI.
But his journey did not stop there.
Today, he holds one of the most powerful and demanding positions inside the Bureau — Deputy Director for Operations, overseeing the very heart of the NBI’s law enforcement machinery.
It is a role that requires absolute trust from the Bureau’s leadership.
And that trust has been firmly placed in him by NBI Director Atty. Melvin Matibag, who counts Pagatpat among his most dependable lieutenants in running the Bureau’s nationwide investigative and operational activities.
Because Tony Pagatpat is not an outsider.
He is homegrown.
A legitimate product of the NBI system — a man who understands the Bureau’s operations, strengths, challenges, and mission because he has lived it for more than three decades.
More than 35 years of dedicated public service.
More than three decades of investigations, intelligence work, operations, and leadership.
Blood, sweat, and sacrifice poured into protecting the Filipino people.
That kind of experience cannot be manufactured.
It is earned.
Inside the NBI, many rank-and-file personnel quietly say the same thing:
If there is someone who truly understands the Bureau — inside and out — it is Tony Pagatpat.
And in any institution, morale rises when one of their own rises to the top.
Because when leadership comes from within, it sends a powerful message:
Hard work still matters.
Loyalty still counts.
Integrity still wins.
As the administration of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. continues to shape the future of law enforcement in the country, one name stands out as a man capable of helping steer the Bureau forward.
A man with 33 years of operational and administrative experience.
A man who rose from the ranks.
A man forged by storms — both literal and political.
A man who never forgot where he came from.
His name is Atty. Antonio Macabasag Pagatpat.
And for many inside the Bureau, the message is simple and clear:
Tony Pagatpat is the real deal.
