OLONGAPO CITY — Newly appointed National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Director Atty. Melvin Matibag paid a courtesy call on Deputy Speaker Jay Khonghun, First District Representative, to discuss key initiatives aimed at strengthening law enforcement operations and addressing the spread of misinformation.
Among the primary matters taken up during the meeting was the proposed construction of a new NBI District Office in Barangay Kalaklan, Olongapo City. The planned facility is intended to enhance the bureau’s operational capacity in Zambales and nearby areas.
According to officials, the proposed district office will serve as a modern investigative hub designed to improve response time, expedite case processing, and provide upgraded forensic and intelligence support. The project is seen as part of broader efforts to modernize the bureau’s regional infrastructure and improve accessibility of services to the public.
Director Matibag emphasized the importance of strengthening institutional capabilities to meet evolving security challenges, noting that updated facilities and equipment are essential to effective law enforcement.
Deputy Speaker Khonghun expressed support for initiatives that would reinforce public safety and institutional efficiency in the province. He underscored the need for continued coordination between the legislative and investigative branches to ensure that law enforcement agencies are adequately supported.
In addition to infrastructure development, the two officials discussed the government’s ongoing campaign against misinformation or “fake news.” They noted concerns over the proliferation of false and misleading information online, which they said can create public confusion and undermine trust in institutions.
Matibag reiterated the NBI’s mandate to enforce existing laws against individuals who deliberately disseminate false information, while emphasizing respect for due process and the rule of law. Khonghun, for his part, stressed the importance of accountability and responsible use of digital platforms.
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to closer collaboration between Congress and the NBI in advancing measures that promote public order, institutional integrity, and national stability.
